What is dual diagnosis

Most people do not arrive knowing they have both

What it is

Dual diagnosis is when an addiction and a mental health condition exist at the same time. Depression and alcohol. Anxiety and benzodiazepines. Trauma and substance use. Burnout and cocaine. The combinations are different for everyone but the pattern is familiar.

One feeds the other

The substance becomes the way of managing the mental health condition. The mental health condition worsens because of the substance. Over time it becomes impossible to separate the two.

Both, at the same time

Most people who arrive at CRTC with a dual diagnosis have been treated for one thing at a time. The addiction was addressed but the depression was not. Or the anxiety was managed with medication but the drinking was never properly treated. And so the cycle continued. At CRTC we treat both simultaneously, because that is the only way to truly break the cycle.

How we treat it

Clinical depth that holds both at once

Treating dual diagnosis well requires a team that truly understands both addiction and mental health.

Not a primary focus on one with the other noted in the file. Both fully addressed, simultaneously, as part of one coherent treatment plan.

Two people clasping hands across a table, a close view of support and connection.

A team built for both

At CRTC our multidisciplinary team includes addiction psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, trauma-informed therapists and specialized counselors. When you arrive we conduct a thorough evaluation that captures the full picture. The addiction, the mental health history, the trauma, the medications, the patterns. From that we build a treatment plan that addresses everything.

The toolkit

Every proven modality, in one place

Our therapeutic approach draws from EMDR, CBT, DBT, somatic work, mindfulness, medication management where appropriate, family therapy and integrative recovery through our CRTC x VINOVA alliance.

Built from the inside

Our founder knows this journey personally

CRTC was not built from a business plan. It was built by someone who lived through addiction and recovery himself. Who sat where you are sitting now. Who experienced the gaps, the fragmentation, the programs that almost worked. And who made a promise to himself to build something that actually did.

Gernot personally answers admissions calls. When you reach out you are not talking to a call center. You are talking to someone who genuinely understands where you are right now.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about dual diagnosis treatment at CRTC

What is dual diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis means having both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. Common combinations include alcohol and depression, anxiety and benzodiazepines, trauma and substance use, and burnout and cocaine or stimulants.

Can both conditions really be treated at the same time?

Yes. In fact treating them separately is one of the most common reasons people relapse after treatment. When only the addiction is addressed the mental health condition remains and continues to drive the use. At CRTC we treat both simultaneously as part of one integrated treatment plan.

How do you know if I have a dual diagnosis?

We conduct a thorough multidisciplinary evaluation when you arrive. This includes psychiatric assessment, psychological evaluation and a full review of your history. Many people arrive not knowing they have a dual diagnosis and discover it through our intake process.

Do I need a diagnosis before I arrive?

No. You do not need a formal diagnosis before you reach out or before you arrive. Our team will conduct a full evaluation and build your treatment plan from there.

Can my family be involved?

Yes. Family therapy is part of our program and we actively encourage family involvement at appropriate stages. We have dedicated resources for families.

Support for families
Why Costa Rica for dual diagnosis treatment?

The therapeutic distance from your home environment is especially important for dual diagnosis. Removing yourself from the triggers, stressors and patterns that have reinforced both conditions creates genuine space for both to be addressed.
