CRTC vs US and Canadian rehab · What families need to know
The most common comparison families make
When families in the United States and Canada are considering CRTC, the comparison they almost always make is with premium US-based treatment centers. This page addresses that comparison directly and honestly. Because you deserve a clear answer, not a sales pitch.
- 1:1 staff to patient ratio
- Maximum 28 patients across both centers
- 30-day relapse guarantee
Why CRTC costs less. And why that does not mean less.
Premium private-pay treatment centers in the United States can cost $90,000 to $100,000 per month or more.
This is not because the clinical care is necessarily better. It is in large part because of the cost structure of operating within the US healthcare and real estate market.
CRTC costs significantly less because we operate outside that system. Our clinical overhead, our staffing and our facilities reflect Costa Rican cost structures while maintaining international clinical standards.
The value comparison is not close. At CRTC a family gets individualized care, a staff to patient ratio of 1:1, IAFA and Ministry of Health accreditation, a certified multidisciplinary clinical team and a 30-day relapse guarantee. At a fraction of the US price.
CRTC
How the two programs compare
| Dimension | CRTC | US programs |
|---|---|---|
| Staff to patient ratio | 1:1 across both centers. | Often much higher patient to staff ratios in high-volume facilities. |
| Program scale | Maximum 28 patients across both centers. Every patient is genuinely known by every clinician. | Many operate at 50 to 100+ patients, making genuine individualization very difficult. |
| Continuum of care | One team guides the client from detox through residential, outpatient and aftercare under a single methodology. | Many hand off between facilities and providers at each transition point. |
| Post-discharge guarantee | 30-day return for clients who complete the 120-day program and relapse within 6 months. No extra cost. | Most offer no post-discharge guarantee of any kind. |
| Insurance vs private pay | Private pay, structured entirely around clinical need and individual outcomes. | Many are insurance-dependent and structured around insurance reimbursement cycles rather than clinical need. |

Why going to Costa Rica is not a compromise. It is a clinical advantage.
The most common concern families raise about international treatment is distance. What if something goes wrong? What if my loved one wants to leave? How do I stay connected?
These are legitimate questions and we address each of them directly in our admissions process.
But distance also has a clinical dimension that is worth naming. Removing a person from the environment, the relationships, the routines, the triggers and the patterns that have reinforced the addiction is one of the most powerful early interventions in treatment. Costa Rica provides that distance while adding something more: a natural setting that actively supports regulation, reflection and healing.
For many clients the distance is not the compromise. It is the point.
What we can't match
We believe in honest comparison. There are things US-based programs do well that we cannot match.
Insurance
Most US programs accept insurance and can navigate the reimbursement process in ways that make treatment more financially accessible for some families. CRTC is private pay, though we assist clients in navigating out-of-network PPO claims where possible.
Proximity
For families who need to visit in person regularly, or for clients with specific medical needs that require proximity to specialist care, a US-based program may be more practical.
Brand recognition
Some US programs carry significant institutional prestige and alumni networks that matter to certain patients.
Our recommendation is always to make the decision based on what is genuinely best for the person. Not on what is most familiar or most convenient.

Questions families ask when comparing CRTC to US programs
Is the clinical quality really comparable to a US program?
Yes. Our clinical team holds internationally recognized credentials. Our program is accredited by IAFA and the Ministry of Health of Costa Rica. Our therapeutic approach draws from the same evidence-based methodologies used in leading US programs. The difference is not clinical quality. It is cost structure and scale.
What if my loved one needs to come home quickly?
San José International Airport has direct flights to major US and Canadian cities. Travel time to the US East Coast is approximately 5 hours. In the event of a genuine emergency our team coordinates with families and medical providers to facilitate return if necessary.
Does insurance cover CRTC?
CRTC is private pay. We assist clients in navigating out-of-network PPO reimbursement where applicable. We recommend contacting your insurer directly to understand your out-of-network benefits.
How do I stay in contact with my loved one during treatment?
Communication with family is managed according to what is clinically appropriate at each stage of treatment. Our team maintains regular communication with designated family contacts and coordinates family therapy sessions remotely. Distance does not mean disconnection.
