Prescription drug addiction treatment · Costa Rica

It often starts with a legitimate need. Then something shifts. We understand how this happens.

Prescription drug misuse is one of the most common and least talked about forms of addiction. Because it began with a doctor's prescription, because the drugs are legal, because the dependency crept in gradually, many people carry enormous shame and confusion about what happened. At CRTC we treat this without judgment.

We understand

We have seen what prescription drug misuse does to a person. And how often it starts with something completely legitimate.

Prescription drug addiction is one of the most misunderstood dependencies precisely because of how it begins. A surgery. A back injury. An anxiety disorder. A diagnosis that required medication. And then at some point the relationship with that medication changed in ways that were not chosen and not expected.

For some people it is painkillers. For others it is stimulants, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medications or muscle relaxants. The substance differs but the experience is often similar. The medication that was supposed to help becomes something that cannot be stopped without feeling sick, anxious, dysregulated or unable to function.

The shame around prescription drug misuse is often especially heavy because it started legitimately. Because a doctor prescribed it. Because it does not fit the image of addiction that most people carry. You are not here because you are weak or broken. You are here because something that began as medical treatment became something more complex and you are ready to address it properly.

How we treat it

We treat the person. Not just the prescription dependency.

Prescription drug misuse covers a wide range of substances and patterns.

Opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines, stimulants, sleep medications and other prescription substances all create different types of dependency and require different clinical approaches.

Thorough evaluation

We start by mapping exactly what is happening

At CRTC we start with a thorough evaluation that identifies the specific substances involved, the nature of the dependency, any underlying conditions that contributed to the misuse and what a safe and effective treatment pathway looks like for you specifically.

Both at once

The dependency and what drove it, together

Many people arrive carrying both a prescription drug dependency and an underlying condition that has never been properly addressed outside of medication. Chronic pain, anxiety, ADHD, depression, trauma or sleep disorders may have driven the initial prescription. We are equipped to treat both the dependency and the underlying condition simultaneously.

Built from the inside

Our founder knows this journey personally

CRTC was not built from a business plan. It was built by someone who lived through addiction and recovery himself. Who sat where you are sitting now. Who experienced the gaps, the fragmentation, the programs that almost worked. And who made a promise to himself to build something that actually did.

Gernot personally answers admissions calls. When you reach out you are not talking to a call center. You are talking to someone who genuinely understands where you are right now.

Medical detox

Safe detox from prescription drugs requires medical expertise. We have it.

Prescription drug detox varies significantly depending on the substance.

Opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines and certain other prescription medications require medically supervised detox with appropriate clinical management.

At CRTC our medical team conducts a thorough evaluation on arrival and manages the detox process with the clinical precision that prescription drug dependency requires. Where tapering protocols are needed they are followed. Where medication-assisted support is clinically appropriate it is provided. Your comfort and your safety are the priorities throughout.

Recovery lived while you are still supported. So that when you leave, it is not theoretical. It is something you have already begun.

You are not alone in what you are carrying

Prescription drug misuse rarely arrives without something underneath it

For most people prescription drug misuse is connected to an underlying condition that has never been properly addressed. Chronic pain that needed managing. Anxiety that was never treated adequately. ADHD that was only addressed through stimulants. Depression or trauma that the medication was temporarily covering.

At CRTC we are equipped to address both the dependency and the underlying conditions simultaneously. Treating only one leaves the other in place and significantly increases the risk of returning to medication or finding another substance to fill the same role.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about prescription drug treatment at CRTC

Do I need to detox before arriving?

No. Our medical detox program is the first phase of treatment and happens on site under full clinical supervision. You do not need to have stopped using before you arrive.

Is it safe to stop prescription drugs on my own?

It depends on the substance. Some prescription drugs, particularly benzodiazepines and opioid painkillers, can be dangerous to stop abruptly without medical supervision. We strongly recommend not attempting to stop these substances without professional support. Our medical team will assess your situation and manage the process safely.

What if I still have a legitimate medical need for the medication?

This is a very common and important question. Our medical and psychiatric team will evaluate your underlying conditions and work with you on appropriate non-addictive alternatives and management strategies where these exist. The goal is not to leave you without support for genuine medical needs but to find a healthier pathway to managing them.

How long does treatment take?

Our programs run at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. The average length of stay is 60 to 90 days. The full 120-day program is required to qualify for the 30-day relapse guarantee.

Can my family be involved in my treatment?

Yes. Family therapy is part of our program and we actively encourage family involvement at appropriate stages. We have dedicated resources for families.
