Why Costa Rica · Addiction and mental health treatment

Costa Rica is not just where the treatment happens. It is part of how it works.

The most common question families ask about CRTC is some version of: why Costa Rica? The answer is both practical and clinical. Distance, nature, safety, healthcare quality, direct flights and a healing environment that actively supports the recovery process.

  • Distance from your triggers
  • Direct flights from the US and Canada
  • English-speaking clinical team

The clinical case for distance

Distance from your environment is the first therapeutic intervention

The people, places, routines, relationships and patterns that have reinforced the addiction are environmental.

They are present in your home, your phone, your neighborhood, your social circle and your daily habits.

Removing a person from that environment does not guarantee recovery. But remaining in it while trying to change makes recovery significantly harder.

Going to Costa Rica for treatment is not about running away. It is about creating the conditions in which something genuinely new can take hold. Real distance from real triggers. Enough space and time to begin building a different kind of life.

What Costa Rica specifically offers

Six reasons Costa Rica works as a treatment environment

Nature as a therapeutic resource

Costa Rica contains some of the most biodiverse natural environments on the planet. Forest, mountains, rivers, Pacific and Caribbean coasts within a few hours of each other. Nature-based therapies including Shinrin-Yoku, adventure therapy, hiking, rafting and beach excursions are all integrated into the clinical program because the evidence for nature-based recovery support is strong.

Safety and stability

Costa Rica has one of the most stable political and social environments in Latin America. It is a democracy with strong institutions, a highly regarded healthcare system and a long track record as a destination for medical and wellness tourism. English is widely spoken in the areas our centers operate.

Healthcare quality

Costa Rica has a world-class healthcare system and a strong medical and pharmaceutical infrastructure. Our clinical team includes Costa Rican and internationally trained physicians and psychiatrists. In the event of a medical need beyond our scope, specialist care is accessible.

Direct flights from the US and Canada

San José International Airport (SJO) has direct flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Dallas and Toronto among others. Travel time from the US East Coast is approximately 5 hours. Getting here is straightforward.

Cost advantage without quality compromise

Operating in Costa Rica allows CRTC to offer a program of international clinical quality at a fraction of the cost of comparable US programs. This is a structural cost advantage, not a quality compromise.

English-speaking recovery community

Costa Rica has an established English-speaking recovery community. Our clients have access to AA, NA and other recovery meetings as part of the program. The recovery infrastructure for English-speaking clients is real and accessible.

Addressing the concerns

The questions families ask about Costa Rica

Is Costa Rica safe?

Yes. Costa Rica is consistently ranked among the safest and most stable countries in Latin America. The areas our centers operate in, Rohrmoser in San José and Atenas in the Central Valley, are safe, well-resourced residential areas with low crime rates relative to the region.

What if there is a medical emergency?

CRTC has physicians and psychiatrists on the clinical team and maintains relationships with local specialist care providers. San José has well-equipped hospitals and medical facilities. In the event of a serious medical emergency requiring care beyond our scope, we coordinate immediately with local medical services and with the family.

What about the language barrier?

CRTC operates entirely in English. Our clinical team speaks English. The program is delivered in English. Costa Rica has a high rate of English proficiency particularly in the urban and tourism-oriented areas where our centers are located.

What if my loved one wants to leave?

Costa Rica's position as an international destination means a client cannot simply walk out and be back in their home environment within an hour. That geographic containment is clinically meaningful. At the same time our clinical team is experienced in working through resistance and ambivalence. Our no-expulsion philosophy means we work through difficult moments rather than simply discharging patients who are struggling.

Their words. Their journey.
