I am here for someone I love
You have watched someone you love carry something heavy for a long time. The substance may have been visible. What was underneath it may not have been. We see both. We are here.
Trauma and addiction are deeply intertwined for many people. The substance became the way of managing what the trauma left behind. At CRTC we address both with the clinical depth and human care both deserve.
For many people the addiction was never really about the substance. It was about what happened before the substance. The event or events that were too much to process. The feelings that had nowhere to go. The nervous system that learned to survive by numbing.
Trauma shows up in many forms. A single catastrophic event. Years of relational harm. Childhood experiences that shaped everything that came after. Loss that was never grieved. Situations that left a person feeling unsafe in their own skin.
When substances become the primary way of managing the aftermath of trauma, the addiction and the trauma become deeply entangled. You cannot fully address one without addressing the other. This is something we understand deeply at CRTC and it shapes everything about how we work.
Traumatic experiences can become locked in the nervous system in a way that keeps them perpetually present.
Substances provide temporary relief from this state. They numb the activation, quiet the intrusive thoughts or allow a person to function when the weight of unprocessed experience would otherwise be unbearable.
But the substances do not resolve the trauma. They delay the processing of it while creating a second layer of harm. When the substance is removed the trauma is still there, often more raw than before.
Treating addiction without addressing the trauma means the person is left with the full weight of what they were managing. Relapse becomes almost inevitable. Treating trauma alongside addiction changes the equation entirely.
You have watched someone you love carry something heavy for a long time. The substance may have been visible. What was underneath it may not have been. We see both. We are here.
You are here for yourself. You may have known for a long time that something from your past was connected to the way you use. You may not have known how to address it. That is exactly what we are here for.
EMDR is central to how CRTC treats trauma.
It is one of the most rigorously researched trauma therapies available and it works directly with the neurological processing of traumatic memories, helping them lose their emotional charge without requiring the person to recount the trauma in detail.
Family therapy is often an important part of trauma treatment given the relational dimensions of many traumatic experiences. Our clinical team holds the full complexity of trauma presentations with care and expertise.

CRTC was not built from a business plan. It was built by someone who lived through addiction and recovery himself. Who sat where you are sitting now. Who experienced the gaps, the fragmentation, the programs that almost worked. And who made a promise to himself to build something that actually did.
Gernot personally answers admissions calls. When you reach out you are not talking to a call center. You are talking to someone who genuinely understands where you are right now.
The mountains of Atenas or the heart of San José. A different pace. Real distance from the environment, pressures and patterns that have made everything harder.
Days with shape and purpose. Therapy that truly knows you. A team that understands this specific combination and what it takes to address both. A community of people who understand without judgment. And slowly, something shifts.
Recovery lived while you are still supported. So that when you leave, it is not theoretical. It is something you have already begun.
Distance from your environment is not an obstacle. It is the first therapeutic step. The people, places, routines and patterns that have reinforced both conditions are environmental. Creating real distance from them creates real space for change.
Leaving your triggers behind is not running away. It is the most practical first step recovery can take.

Learn about addiction and depression treatmentYes, when delivered by a trained clinician. EMDR includes a careful preparation phase that builds coping resources and a sense of safety before working with traumatic material. The pace is always determined by the client's readiness. No one is pushed into trauma work before they are ready.
No. EMDR works without requiring a detailed verbal account of traumatic events. Somatic approaches also work at a level below language. You will never be required to describe experiences in detail before you are ready.
A formal prior diagnosis is not required. Our psychiatric and clinical team conducts a thorough evaluation on arrival. If PTSD or trauma-related presentations are identified through that process, the treatment plan will reflect it.
Our programs run at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. The average length of stay is 60 to 90 days. The full 120-day program is required to qualify for the 30-day relapse guarantee.
