Supporting Recovery After Treatment · Costa Rica Treatment Center

Treatment ends. Recovery does not. This is what comes next.

Discharge from treatment is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of the hardest part. Understanding what to expect, how to support your loved one and how to take care of yourself makes a real difference in the months ahead.

What to expect after discharge

The first months are the most important. And the most fragile.

Recovery after treatment is not linear.

Most people who complete a residential program return home with real tools, genuine insight and meaningful motivation. They also return to the same environment, the same relationships and sometimes the same pressures that contributed to the addiction in the first place.

The first 6 months after discharge are statistically the highest-risk period for relapse. This is not a reason for pessimism. It is a reason to be prepared, to have support systems in place and to understand that setbacks are part of many people's recovery journeys without being the end of them.

The CRTC approach to aftercare

We do not believe treatment ends at discharge

CRTC's model is built around a continuum of care: 4 Phases 1 Experience.

The aftercare phase maintains the clinical connection established during treatment. Regular check-ins, continued therapeutic support and structured monitoring mean that the relationship with CRTC does not end the day a client walks out. For families, this is important to understand because it means you are not alone in supporting your loved one through the transition.

The 30-day guarantee
30days
at no extra cost

One of the most meaningful things CRTC offers families is the 30-day relapse guarantee. If a client who has completed the full 120-day program experiences a relapse within 6 months of discharge, they can return for an additional 30-day stay at no extra program fee.

This guarantee is not just a commercial offer. It is a statement of our philosophy. We do not believe our responsibility ends at the gate. We stand behind the work we do. And we want families to know that if things go wrong after discharge, the door is still open.

How families can support recovery at home

Your role changes after treatment. Here is how.

Create a recovery-supportive environment

This means understanding what the person needs to maintain their recovery and making adjustments at home where possible. Removing substances from the home, being thoughtful about social situations that involve alcohol or other substances and being aware of known triggers are all practical contributions.

Respect their recovery program

Your loved one will return home with practices, tools and commitments that are part of their recovery. Attending meetings, maintaining a routine, avoiding certain situations or people. These are not inconveniences. They are the structure that supports long-term recovery. Respecting and supporting these is one of the most important things a family can do.

Rebuild trust gradually

Addiction damages trust. Recovery rebuilds it slowly over time. This is not something that can be rushed. Be honest about where you are, allow the person to demonstrate their commitment through action over time and try not to let past experiences poison every new situation.

Know the warning signs of potential relapse

Relapse rarely happens without warning signs. Increasing stress, withdrawal from recovery supports, changes in mood or routine, renewed contact with people or places associated with previous using. Knowing these signs and being able to have an open conversation about them early can make a significant difference.

Take care of yourself

Family members often neglect their own wellbeing during and after a loved one's treatment. Your recovery, in terms of your own mental health and your own needs, matters. Al-Anon and other family support programs are specifically designed to support the people around someone in recovery.
