The Family Program at CRTC · Costa Rica Treatment Center

Recovery is not something that happens to one person. It happens in a family.

Addiction affects everyone around it. The patterns that developed around the using, the roles family members took on, the damage to trust and communication, these do not disappear when someone enters treatment. They need to be addressed directly. That is what the family program at CRTC is designed to do.

What the family program includes

Family therapy is built into the program. Not bolted on.

Family therapy sessions

Family therapy is part of our clinical program. Sessions are conducted by our family therapist Mariana Charpentier, who holds a Bachelor's degree from Texas A&M and a Master's degree from the University of San Diego and brings specific expertise in the relational dynamics of addiction and recovery. Sessions are conducted remotely to accommodate the distance and time zone differences most families are managing.

Regular clinical communication

Designated family contacts receive regular updates from our clinical team about how their loved one is progressing. The balance between the client's confidentiality and the family's need for information is managed carefully and respectfully.

Family psychoeducation

Understanding addiction as a condition rather than a choice, understanding the recovery process and its non-linear nature, and understanding the family's role in supporting or inadvertently obstructing that process are all part of what we offer to families.

Support for family members themselves

Family members often arrive at CRTC having carried a great deal for a long time. Our clinical team is attentive to this and can provide guidance and support for family members, not only for the client.

Someone who understands both the clinical and the human dimensions of what your family is carrying

Family therapy at CRTC is led by Mariana Charpentier. Mariana holds a Bachelor's degree from Texas A&M and a Master's degree from the University of San Diego. She works specifically with the relational and family system dimensions of addiction and recovery.

Family therapy is conducted with the understanding that no family member caused the addiction and none is responsible for fixing it. The purpose is to support healing, improve communication and help the family system adjust in a way that supports long-term recovery.

What family involvement looks like in practice

Practical answers to the questions families ask most

How often will we be in contact?

The frequency of family contact is managed according to what is clinically appropriate at each stage of treatment. Our team will discuss this with you during the admissions process and will maintain consistent communication throughout.

What should families expect in the early stages?

The first phase of treatment, including medical detox and the initial weeks of residential care, typically involves a period where the client needs space to stabilize and begin the clinical work. Contact with family is managed thoughtfully during this period and will be discussed openly with the family.

Can families visit?

Yes, at appropriate stages of treatment. San José International Airport has direct flights from major US and Canadian cities. The clinical team will advise on timing and logistics.

Does the distance make family involvement harder?

The distance creates therapeutic space for the client, which is clinically valuable. At the same time family involvement remains possible and important. Remote family therapy sessions are a normal part of how we work with families across time zones.

For families who are still deciding

You do not need your loved one to be ready before you call us

Many families contact us long before their loved one has agreed to treatment.

Gernot personally takes admissions calls and has had this conversation many hundreds of times. He understands what families are facing and he can provide honest, practical guidance.

We can provide information packages and virtual facility tours that you can share with your loved one when the moment is right. Sometimes seeing the program clearly, understanding what treatment actually looks like here, is what shifts a person from ambivalence toward willingness.

Their words. Their journey.
